Looking back in my rear-view mirror, I remember being a naive Flash designer. Since I knew my way around Flash a little and sufficient knowledge of HTML, I thought that I could start doing websites that included Flash websites. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. I took on this job for a lighting company that did very high-end lighting. The person I was doing the site for had a computer shop. They were two partners. One was a born Canadian of Asian heritage and the other had a strong foreign accent from the roots of both of these guys. This was quite a circus since the foreigner was always hyper and wanted to test and finish the site very quickly, while his partner was laid back and smooth.
During two weeks work on this project, I bought Flash slideshow software, and read the Book 'Advanced Flash' tremedously so I could do the required work that was originally beyond my scope.
The problem I had faced with these guys was that they would agree on what I was doing, then, come back and ask for more changes. When things got close to being done, I had realized this was going to be a never-ending runaround. The one fact I had working against me was that I did not make the slideshow exactly the way they wanted, but they had agreed on the other variations I had displayed.
After being stuck in this circle of no solutions, I gave up on the project.
Within one week, they decompiled my work and used 80% of what I had done. With Flash, it is possible to grab others work and change it if you have decent knowledge of Flash and actionscript.
My initial reactions were feelings of anger, as this had obviously been the intention the whole time. I immdeiate thought that next time my images will be watermarked for any samples I show herein thereafter.
Since I was a fresh newbie with an ad on Craigslist, I did not have experience at dealing with enquiries. But, looking back, I also should have realized that I should not have taken on a job that was little over my head.
Although I was angry at being taken for a ride, I was the second person that had this happen to them while building this particular website.
I took that as a learning experience and moved on. It was good that I knew how to start analyzing my customers and knew what questions to ask because about 7-10 enquiries are not serious or come from people with nothing better to do than harass others.
In the end, I was scammed, but I was the Sham.
